Angel Reviews

Season 4, Episode 1, "Deep Down"

It's been over a week since I saw the season premiere of Angel, so instead of relying on my faulty memory for a scene by scene recount, I'll summarize the episode in general.

Angel in his box in the sea, has a series of hallucinations about the gang. Some pleasant, some not. These hallucinations will continue most of the episode.

Wesley and Lilah are back in bed. Lilah presses him for Angel info but Wesley pleads ignorance. Lilah leaves, then Wesley presents us with Justine (Holtz's old charge) in a cage.  Remember Wesley when he was Faith's Watcher on Buffy? It's like two different people. Anyway, Justine has spilled the beans to Wesley about what Connor and her did to Angel. So Wesley and prisoner Justine have spent the summer trying to find Angel's watery tomb. As luck would have it, they find it this episode, and drag Angel back to the surface.

Meanwhile, back at Angel Investigations, Gunn & Fred are trying to hold the fort, with both Angel & Cordy missing in action for the summer. They're also taking care of the manipulative Connor. Gunn & Fred get a lead about a vampire that may have seen Angel before he went missing. Connor not wanting to be found out, stakes the vampire, which angers Gunn, and causes sympathy in Fred. It appears that Connor has been playing the two off each other all summer long.

At Wolfram & Hart, a meeting convenes to discuss Lilah's future with the company. Linwood seems intent on bringing her down. However Lilah has done an end-around past Linwood and has been promoted over Linwood by the Senior Partners. Lilah pushes a button & Linwood's chair decapitates him. He should've read the manual.

Back on the boat, Wesley & Angel have an uneasy reunion. They both decide that a meeting with Connor is definitely in order. They free Justine and call Fred to tell them they're on their way. Fred is seriously pissed off by Connor's betrayal and goes to town on him with a stun gun. When Connor regains consciousness, he's tied to a chair. He briefly escapes but is stopped by daddy.  Connor admits he has no clue what happened to Cordy. Angel tells Connor he loves him, then tells him to 'get out'. Connor leaves. The last scene is of Cordy in her 'higher level'.  She mentions how incredibly bored she is.

What I liked:  Fairly fast paced episode. Angel's hallucinations were poignant, especially the Cordy ones. Seeing Wesley interact with the Fang Gang again. Connor remains a very interesting & dynamic character. He has yet to be in a boring scene. Now that he's lost the trust of everyone, it'll be interesting to see how he's used. Fred's scene where she attacks Connor was extremely well done. We see how deeply betrayed she felt. The shake-up at Wolfram & Hart. Lilah looks to be a more significant character this season.

What I didn't like: Where exactly did Wesley get that boat? Lorne's limited use. Cordy's limited use. I don't really like Cordy's 'higher plane' storyline. Doesn't make much sense, and it separates her from the rest of the cast.

Rating: (out of 6) 4
