The Mighty Hercules

Shades of Scorpius!

I think every kid who grew up from the 60's onward has a special place in their heart for the Might Hercules. And no, I don't mean the animated Disney feature from a few years back, nor the late 90's Kevin Sorbo series. Those were entertaining interpretations of Hercules. But those Hercules were NOT mighty. Did those series have theme songs like this? And did they have gay centaurs as side kicks? Or feature such a Rogues gallery as Daedalus, The Mask, and Willamene? Or ever summoned by a moonbeam? (or whatever the hell that was) The answer to all those questions is a resounding NO!

Each Hercules episode was only about 5 minutes long so there was no time for exposition or character development. Here is in a nutshell every Hercules episode.

  • Serene Hellenistic kingdom of Caladon is shown.

  • Threat is introduced, usually in the form of Daedalus, but sometimes the Mask or Willamene would be the foil.

  • Newton and Toot's gay romp is rudely interrupted by said threat and they quickly summon Herc.

  • Herc comes flying down from Mt. Olympus to face the threat

  • Herc updated on situation by Newton while Toot madly blows his flute.

  • Herc's first attempt of fighting the threat is always thwarted

  • Until he puts on his magical ring, and uh oh! It's all over but the crying..

Here is a typical ending to a typical episode.

And here's a typical episode.

Good God you can actually by the Mighty Hercules Album on Amazon.com

I wonder if it has this memorable ditty, an original composition by Newton.

I'm glad,
I'm glad,
to have,
to have,
a friend,
a friend,
like Hercules,
like Hercules!

Listen to the theme song again. And read they lyrics.

Hercules, hero of song and story!
Hercules, winner of ancient glory!
Fighting for the right, fighting with his might;
With the strength of ten, ordinary men!
Hercules, people are safe when near him!
Hercules, only the evil fear him!
Softness in his eyes, iron in his thighs;
Virtue in his heart, fire in every part of
