Sports

Back in the day, baseball and hockey were the only two sports that I cared about. I'd spend hours pouring over the various statistics, analyzing every digit for it's true meaning. I didn't really have favorite teams, just as long as the teams kept producing statistics I was happy. Then something happened...I became an accounting major. My life long love affair with numbers abruptly came to a very sudden end. I grew to hate numbers in all their forms. Be they in financial statements, text books or even phone books, I despised numbers. I learned to associate numbers with a boredom so absolute and all encompassing that in comparison, the act of breathing seemed fresh, original, and dare I say at times, even exhilarating. That's accountancy for you.

Anyway, as my interest in hockey and baseball waned, it was peaked by another sport, or I should say, another league...the National Football League. Paradoxically NFL stats don't induce the dread "accounting effect".  And thank god they don't, because I could not imagine going through the fall months without the NFL.

The main reason why the NFL is superb is the league parity. It was a long time coming, but these days, any team can win the Super Bowl in any given year. The times of entire decades being dominated by a single team are over. And good riddance. Also unlike other sports, every game of the year is crucial to a teams success. In baseball and especially hockey, the regular season means next to nothing. In the NFL, every week it's a BIG game.  Unfortunately my beloved New York Giants seem to lose more of these BIG games than not, and with the vastly improved Washington Redskins in the same division, chances are they'll continue to lose for awhile.

I also like to watch tennis, and when I say tennis, I mean the lovely and statuesque Mary Pierce. Oh I hear you people hissing and booing, even as you read this. "You only like her 'cause she's so beautiful". Hey Chester, those are your words, not mine. And I take great personal offense that it is assumed that any male fan of a female athlete, is so because of  said athletes' looks and sex appeal. You people should be ashamed. I admire Ms. Pierce's determination and intensity which she brings to every match. Ms. Pierce is also a very intelligent player who often outsmarts her opponents on the court. It is these qualities that endear Ms. Pierce to me, not any crude, superficial attraction. I mean if I was so hung up on Ms. Pierce's looks, don't you think I would litter this page with pictures of her. But look around, no pictures to be found.

UPDATE:    When I originally wrote this page almost three years ago, Mary Pierce was the only reason to watch tennis. Three years later and she's vanished off the face of the earth, so this is more a Missing Persons Report than an ode to her 'tennis talents'. So if you've seen Mary Pierce about, please notify the proper authorities.
